Meet the Team_Matt

Matt Tanis first joined the Envirologic team in 2000 as a Project Biologist. His main duties included conducting due diligence work (Phase I and II Environmental Assessments, Baseline Environmental Assessments, etc.), ecological assessments, and wetland delineations. However, Matt's role has since evolved, and he now primarily works as one of Envirologic's Environmental Inspectors for pipeline projects.

Envirologic's clients in the energy and utility sector face inherent obstacles associated with placing, replacing, and repairing utility pipelines. As an Environmental Inspector, Matt offers key support during these activities by collecting information needed to obtain applicable permits and monitoring contractors' compliance with those permits as well as client-specific standard operating procedures. This work is to ensure minimal impact to the environment and document proper restoration. Matt also conducts various support services for these projects, including biological assessments such as threatened and endangered species surveys and wetland delineations.

With over nine years of experience performing environmental inspections on pipeline projects, and nineteen years working as a Project Biologist, Matt is extremely knowledgeable and able to conduct assessments on various types of sites. Further, the breadth of his expertise gained from his unique background allows him to complete practically any environmental-related service a client may need.

Matt's favorite aspect of his job is the freedom it offers. His typical workday is spent outside in nature, not in an office. He also enjoys being able to travel and see lots of different places. While most of the work Matt does is concentrated in Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois, he is occasionally called to work on large, complex projects outside his designated pipeline tracts when a client requires his specific expertise. As a result, he's worked on sites across the country, from Michigan's Upper Peninsula to Oklahoma.

Matt has two children, one 11 years old and the other 15, so he spends a majority of his time outside of work running to and from his kids' sports practices and games. When he does have genuine free time, he enjoys a variety of outdoors activities including bird watching, hiking, and fishing. Every spring, he and a group of friends travel to Ohio for The Biggest Week in American Birding festival, which encompasses several days of birding walks, workshops, and presentations. According to Matt, birding doesn't require strict preparation, just a pair of binoculars in your backpack. In fact, when he's on a project site by himself, Matt will often bring along binoculars just in case he spots a bird of particular interest.

This time of year, Matt and his kids take off for their annual vacation to the Florida Keys. Their trip is chocked full of fishing, snorkeling, birding, and more -- and not a snowflake to be seen! Have a very merry Green Christmas, Matt.
