The Barrel + Beam Brewery site was first developed into a commercial bar and restaurant, the Northwoods Supper Club, in 1933. After being open for over 70 years, the supper club closed. To support redevelopment of the vacant property, the Marquette Charter Township Assessor designated the site as a functionally obsolete property. In 2016, the property was purchased by U.P. natives who wanted to convert the functionally obsolete supper club into Barrel + Beam, a brewery that focused on farmhouse and barrel-aged beer. The $2 million renovated brewery opened its doors in January of 2018. This project not only benefited the local community by providing a gathering space for local residents, but it also created new investment in the community by supplying new jobs and making productive use of an underutilized piece of property.
