Erik Peterson initially joined Envirologic's staff in 2000 as a Project Scientist. When Erik first applied for this position, what set him apart from other candidates was his background in customer service -- he worked as a manager at a local pet store while pursuing his Hydrogeology degree at Western Michigan University. Today, Erik's unique customer-oriented perspective is reflected in his "end in mind" approach to projects, as well as his interactions with clients, many of whom are unfamiliar with the technical aspects of our work and the environmental industry in general.

In 2018, Erik was promoted from Project Manager to Manager of Due Diligence Services. In his new role, he manages and coordinates our Due Diligence Service Team and serves as the primary point of contact for clients in need of due diligence services. The majority of his time is thus spent engaging with prospective clients and educating them on environmental due diligence and the process of acquiring property. Erik's favorite part of his job is communicating with clients -- coming to an understanding of what a client's project is, identifying what they're trying to accomplish, and then helping them to navigate the environmental component of their projects so they can achieve their objectives. Erik also works as a brownfields specialist and helps municipalities and developers identify and leverage funding resources to advance projects.

One of the biggest current concerns in the realm of due diligence is vapor intrusion, which is the migration of volatile chemicals such as petroleum and industrial solvents from buried wastes or contaminated soil or groundwater into an overlying or nearby building. With increased regulatory scrutiny, constantly evolving regulatory guidance, and implications for redevelopment planning, addressing vapor intrusion has become the environmental driver for many projects. As such, Erik recently developed a vapor intrusion training presentation to educate developers and other organizations that want to learn more on the topic. If you are interested in scheduling a training session, please contact Erik at (269) 342-1100 or via email.

In his free time, Erik loves to golf. For the past 25 years, he has been a part of a social golf league that plays out of Pine View in Three Rivers. During the "Stay Home, Stay Safe" Michigan executive order, Erik purchased a digital camera and gained another hobby: photography. He now visits locations managed by the Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy, state parks, and preserves to take pictures of nature and wildlife. Check out his osprey photo, which Envirologic posted earlier this year. Erik and his wife, Christy, also enjoy going on camping trips during the summer with their dog, Zoey.

Every year, Erik and Christy plan a tropical vacation that includes snorkeling and diving. Erik is an active snorkeler and it's on his bucket list to become a certified diver. Someday, they want to take a vacation to the Maldives -- an island nation full of beautiful, screensaver-worthy beaches, wildlife, and coral reefs perfect for snorkeling.
