On Veterans Day, I can t help but think of my Dad and what he and so many others have had to and continue to sacrifice in order to serve our Country. My father, Dr. Richard Hawkins (right) and his brother, Harold Hawkins (left) both served in World War II. My Dad also had three other brothers that served as well. Can you imagine a family where three brothers (sons) were actively engaged in war at the same time? My Family was truly blessed since, despite war's best efforts (Harold was shot down and was a prisoner of war; Richard was in the Battle of the Bulge), all of them survived and returned home. However, so many families have had their histories re-written because of loved ones that were lost.
On this Veterans Day, we honor and thank those that have served, those that are serving and those that served their Country with the ultimate sacrifice, their life. I only hope that in our daily grind we don't lose sight of the fact that without our Veterans and their service, our lives would likely be very different, and freedom might not have been a word we could rely on. May God continue to bless our Nation and hold our Veterans, our active duty service members and their families in his hands!
