Part of the culture of Envirologic is serving and supporting the communities in which we live, work and play. One of those communities, Kalamazoo, is home base for our crew and we sponsor a number of local events that benefit the area. One such event we are proudly sponsoring is coming up on October 1st, a fun, and worthwhile adventure, the inaugural Kalamazoo Parks & Recreation, Eco Raft Race.

What's an Eco Raft Race and more importantly what is the Kittiwake Cup?
Teams are tasked with constructing vessels using recycled and/or eco-friendly materials that are creative and man-powered to float down the Kalamazoo River. You don't need a team of engineers to build a raft, just a crew of friends or business associates up for the challenge and ready to have a great time. We challenge you to creatively assemble recycled and/or eco-friendly materials to resemble a raft (that floats!) Each vessel will be inspected for materials used, it must pass a pre-race inspection, and be "river-worthy." The raft can be any shape or size; use your imagination!

In 1889 one of the first conservationist groups, the plumage league, was founded to protect the Kittiwake, a small seagull that was endangered by human carelessness. The Kittiwake Cup is a celebration of our returned ability to swim, paddle, and play in the Kalamazoo River and an opportunity to learn how we can continue to protect our waterways and aquatic life.

What can you win?
Cash prizes will be awarded to the First Place Finisher, the Most Beautiful Vessel, and the Most Enthusiastic Crew. Plus, bragging rights of course!

Where do we launch and land?
All the rafts will launch at Mayors' Riverfront Park and land at Arcadia Ales (yes, there is beer involved.) Find out all the race details here

Need some inspiration to get going on your raft? Check out this article about a group floating the Mississippi on a raft made of trash. Their aim is to produce a documentary about how the river's pollution impacts local communities, as well as what efforts, are being made to clean it up and restore it.

Hope you'll join us on the inaugural "raft" journey down the Kalamazoo River. If you'd rather not build a raft but want to help out, you're welcome to hop in your kayak or canoe and help us clean up the river along the way.

Jump in, get involved; we hope you'll join us! Find out more here.
