Kalamazoo, MI - Envirologic is pleased to announce the St. Clair County Brownfield Coalition was recently awarded a U.S. EPA Brownfield Assessment Grant. These funds will provide $400,000 for environmental assessments, cleanup planning and community outreach activities. In Michigan, five communities received the federal funds out of twenty-two applicants. The funding was awarded through the EPA's Brownfields program and includes funding for both Hazardous Substances and Petroleum assessments. This grant will provide the resources for not only environmental assessments, but cleanup planning and community outreach activities as well.
These are very competitive grant funds in which Envirologic was integral in securing for the Coalition, which includes the St. Clair County Brownfield Redevelopment Authority (lead member), the St. Clair Land Bank Authority, the Cities of Marysville and Port Huron and Port Huron Township The communities that receive these grant funds have demonstrated leadership, developed strong local partnerships and have the skills necessary to transform brownfield sites into productive uses which will benefit targeted areas and the community as a whole.
The Coalition was fortunate to receive a $1,000,000 U.S. EPA Brownfield Coalition Assessment Grant in 2010 for hazardous and petroleum sites. With these funds, the coalition assessed 42 sites in 9 communities. The assessments addressed approximately 693 acres with hazardous substances impacts and over 93 acres associated with petroleum impacts, resulting in over 1,400 new jobs and 264 retained jobs and over $160 million in investment. The St. Clair County Brownfield Redevelopment Authority has demonstrated success and competence in managing brownfield redevelopment grants in the past and is experienced in Brownfield Redevelopment. These new grant funds will help the County build upon those successes.
"We applaud St. Clair County for their efforts to take on the challenging brownfield sites in their communities," said Jeff Hawkins, President of Envirologic, "we look forward to working with these coalition members as they create new opportunities for investment and jobs that can result from redeveloping brownfield sites."
