The St. Clair County Brownfield Redevelopment Authority (SCCBRA) has named Envirologic Technologies, Inc., an environmental services and consulting firm, to manage its U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Brownfield Coalition Hazardous Substances and Petroleum Assessment Grants in the amount of $400,000. The Coalition consists of the SCCBRA (lead member), the St. Clair County Land Bank Authority, the Cities of Port Huron and Marysville and Port Huron Township. This is the second EPA Assessment Grant the county has received; the first was in 2010.
In May 2017, the EPA awarded St. Clair County two brownfield assessment grants, $275,000 for hazardous substances and $125,000 for petroleum. The grant funds will be used for environmental assessments of sites with known or perceived contamination, cleanup planning, and community outreach activities. Envirologic will serve as the approved consultant for these grant-related activities.
The Coalition was fortunate to receive a $1,000,000 U.S. EPA Brownfield Coalition Assessment Grant in 2010 for hazardous and petroleum sites. With these funds, the Coalition assessed 42 sites in nine communities. The assessments addressed approximately 693 acres associated with hazardous substances impacts and over 93 acres associated with petroleum impacts, resulting in over 1,400 new jobs, 264 retained jobs and $165 million in investment. The SCCBRA has demonstrated success and competence in managing brownfield redevelopment grants in the past and is experienced in Brownfield Redevelopment. These new grant funds will help the county build upon those successes.
"Since 2010, Envirologic has been privileged to work with St. Clair County as they develop their brownfield program," said Jeff Hawkins, President and Co-Owner of Envirologic Technologies, Inc. "We look forward to implementing the important work ahead, utilizing and layering various tools and resources to encourage redevelopment of contaminated, blighted and forgotten properties."
Envirologic provides or has provided management and implementation consulting services with other U.S. EPA Brownfield Assessment Grants for the Counties of Kalamazoo, Alger, Jackson, Marquette, Van Buren, Leelanau and St. Joseph and the Cities of Kalamazoo and Muskegon.
