One of Kalamazoo County's biggest successes is the support provided for the redevelopment of the Midlink site, a former General Motors stamping facility. A multitude of environmental issues existed at the site, including areas of defined contamination, former dump areas, PCB-contaminated surfaces within the main plant, and other concerns. The County used its EPA Assessment Grant to help in assessment and planning soil management issues related to construction of a new hotel in front of the industrial complex (the 95-unit Candlewood Suites, opened in 2010).
Envirologic also prepared a complex Brownfield Plan for the 360-acre, 37-parcel site to assist the developers in reimbursement for eligible cleanup costs of the main facility and for environmental assessment activities at undeveloped parcels. These efforts have brought additional investment to Midlink, including Kaiser Aluminum's new facility, Hark Orchids, among others. Envirologic assisted with several amendments to the Brownfield Plan. This complex project required frequent and extensive communication between various parties, but clearly the level of job creation and investment has been one of Kalamazoo County's biggest economic redevelopment success stories.
